I am completely moved by Gordon Milne’s portrait of me. I have had a long and vast career in sport and humanitarianism, and I feel that this powerful image captures so much of it. While I can still see the swimmer I was, Gordon has also captured the leader and man I have grown to be. I am thrilled with this work and, in my personal opinion, think it is one of Gordon’s best.

MARK TEWKSBURY

Mark Tewksbury is best known as a gold-medal-winning Olympic swimmer. His remarkable sixteen-year athletic career included three Olympic medals – including the gold Medal in the 100 meter backstroke in the Summer Games in Barcelona in 1992, numerous world records and inductions into three major Halls of Fame.

Although retired as an athlete, Tewksbury remains a highly respected public figure, motivational speaker, humanitarian and human rights activist. On August 5, 2010, he was named the chef de mission of the 2012 Canadian Summer Olympic team.

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame celebrated it’s official opening to tremendous acclaim on Canada Day. The Canadian Sport Heroes Collection was proudly exhibited as part of the opening ceremonies in the new Changing Gallery. It will be on exhibit from July 1 until December 31 and will be on loan to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame until 2015 as part of the collection.
